Senator Ricketts’ Weekly Column: Merry Christmas, Nebraska!
The Christmas season is one of joy, peace, and reflection. As we gather with family and friends, we celebrate the many blessings in our lives. We decorate our homes with festive lights. We share meals with loved ones. We embrace the traditions that make this time of year so special. Christmas is also an opportunity to reflect on the true meaning of the season and the values that unite us: faith, family, and fellowship.
For my family, Christmas is about marking the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. His humble arrival in a manger brought hope and healing to our broken world. His message of love and service guides us every day. Jesus taught that "it is more blessed to give than to receive," and that true greatness is found in serving others. This should remind us that Christmas is not simply about the gifts we receive, but about the gifts we give through acts of kindness and service. Jesus’ message of love and service continues to guide and motivate us towards a better future.
Nebraskans embody this spirit of service every day. We should be proud that our state ranks 3rd in the nation for formal volunteering. This is no small achievement. It shows that Nebraskans are committed to helping others. That can mean packing meals for families in need. It can mean volunteering at a local shelter. It can mean helping an elderly neighbor collect leaves or shovel snow. Our state’s volunteer spirit reflects who we are. We are hardworking, compassionate, and always ready to lend a helping hand.
Let’s also remember the brave women and men who will spend the holidays away from their families. We owe so much to these first responders, medical professionals, and law enforcement officers. They work tirelessly to keep us safe. We also remember the servicemembers who are far from home. These heroes defend our freedoms. They protect our way of life. Their sacrifices, and the sacrifices of their families, are never forgotten. We should thank them for their service and pray for their safe return.
As we gather around the Christmas tree, let us also remember those who are struggling. Whether it’s someone grieving the loss of a loved one or a family facing hardship, Christmas is a time to reach out to those in need. Too many people experience loneliness during the holidays. Sometimes, the smallest gestures—a phone call, a meal, a kind word—can make a world of difference. In the spirit of Christmas, let’s take a moment to help our neighbors and offer our support to those around us. By doing so, we strengthen the bonds that unite us as a community and as a state.
While we celebrate the joy of the season, we also recognize the challenges many face around the world. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are suffering in conflict zones. We continue to hope and pray for peace in places torn by violence. We grieve with those who have lost loved ones. We stand in solidarity with the families of those Americans who are still being held hostage around the world. And we recommit ourselves to supporting our troops and doing all we can to bring peace and justice to the world.
As we look forward to the year ahead, I am inspired by the countless acts of service that take place every day here in Nebraska. These actions remind us that we are never alone. Together, we make Nebraska a better place for everyone.
On behalf of my family, my team, and myself, have a joyful, peaceful, and meaningful Christmas. May you experience the true joy of the holiday season. Merry Christmas, Nebraska!
