“Shine for Gold” G-I Showdown Unites Middle Schools for Purpose Beyond the Court

GRAND ISLAND (Neb.) — “For the fighters. For the survivors. For the ones we remember.” That’s the resounding message for the three GIPS Middle School volleyball teams as they prepare to square-off on Friday for a friendly triangular with a deeper purpose.

“Shine for Gold” is the banner of the annual G-I Showdown. A triangular as Barr, Walnut, and Westridge Middle Schools battle it out at their annual matchups. Beyond the scoreboard, however, lies a far greater goal: shining a spotlight on pediatric cancer awareness and raising vital support for affected families… “Shine for Gold”.

Attendance and participation serve as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when schools rally around a shared cause.  Walnut Principal Selena Lukasiewicz appreciates the G-I showdown’s history of giving back to a greater cause, and the impact the young student athletes are able to make.

“Unfortunately, pediatric cancer has affected many in our state, our community, and in our school, as well.” Selena reflected.  “When the Walnut 8th Grade Volleyball Coach and team approached me with the idea of a “Gold Out” to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer, I was thrilled to help them organize and support this important cause.”

When looking for a community partner for the “Shine for Gold” efforts, Grand Island’s own Grace Cancer Foundation felt like a perfect fit.  Walnut Volleyball Coach Kim Luthy made the call, and the collaboration started.

All proceeds from free-will donations at the entrance, partial proceeds from homemade cake pop sales, and official event t-shirt sales will directly benefit the Grace Cancer Foundation. The foundation provides local support, resources, and hope to pediatric cancer patients and their families during their most challenging times.

So, the invitation is issued:  Pack the stands and wear gold!

The Grand Island community is invited to attend, cheer on our student-athletes, and join the fight against childhood cancer.
