Signs designating parking spaces for veterans will be installed at six public locations around Hastings.

Council members voted 8-0 during their regular meeting on July 27, 2026 to approve a resolution authorizing one veteran parking sign to be placed at each of the following locations:

-City Hall Parking Lot
-City Auditorium Parking Lot
-Parks & Recreation/Armory Parking Lot
-Hastings Police Department
-City Right-of-Way outside U.S. Post Office
-City Right-of-Way outside Hastings Veteran Service Office.
The signs will be supplied at no cost to the City by the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which is the national union representing workers who build and maintain the tracks, bridges, buildings and other structures on the railroads of the United States.

City of Hastings Street Department crews will install the signs at the designated locations as their schedules allow.

Staci Moody-Gilbert of Hastings, who serves as Vice President of the Northwest Region of the BMWED, presented the item to the Council. 

She said the BMWED has a strong veteran presence. 

“We’re trying to do some initiatives to bring more attention to our military folks across the United States,” she said. 

She is a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in Pensacola, Florida and Norfolk, Virginia. She was a Boatswains Mate Second class/deck petty officer and worked at Port Operations on Tug boats and a Yard Oiler.

The green and white sign includes the BMWED logo and American flag. The sign states “Veteran Priority Parking/ Provided by BMWED of IBT Armed forces Council/ Thank you for your service.”

Mayor Jay Beckby, himself a veteran having served in the U.S. Army National Guard, said he liked the sign as he held one up during the discussion. 

“I think it’s a good-looking sign,” he said. “I think it’s durable and I think it will last. I thought it was a job well done.”

Moody-Gilbert said usage of the designated parking stalls will be done on the honor system.
