South Locust Street Paving Improvement Project Moves Forward

Grand Island, Neb. — The intersection of South Locust Street and Fonner Park Road has officially reopened to allow traffic on the south, east and west legs of the intersection.
However, South Locust Street remains closed to the north of the intersection from Fonner Park Road to Anderson Avenue for ongoing construction. A project corridor detour will remain in effect, utilizing Stolley Park Road, Adams Street and Anna Street. This detour will stay in place for the remainder of the 2025 construction season. Access to businesses along South Locust Street between Stolley Park Road and Anna Street will be maintained throughout the project.
A localized construction zone detour will route traffic via Fonner Park Road, Eddy Street and Anderson Avenue. South Locust Street will remain closed to through north-south traffic for the rest of the season, as work progresses north of Fonner Park Road. Additional updates will be provided as the project moves through its various phases.
The South Locust Street project includes full reconstruction from Fonner Park Road to Koenig Street. Planned improvements include replacing the existing asphalt roadway with concrete curb and gutter, installation of sidewalks and a shared-use trail, storm sewer upgrades, water main and sanitary sewer repairs, new street lighting, pavement markings and updated signage. A new roundabout will also be constructed at the intersection of South Locust Street and Anna Street/Bismark Road.
This is a two-season construction project. Reconstruction from Fonner Park Road to Delaware Avenue is scheduled for the current construction season, with the remaining segment from Delaware Avenue to Koenig Street planned for 2026. On February 11, 2025, the Grand Island City Council awarded the $9,044,222.01 construction contract to Elsbury Construction, LLC of Grand Island.
