Stolley Park Railroad to Close for Major Renovations

Todd McCoy Interview

Grand Island, Neb. — A transformative series of improvements are coming to the beloved Stolley Park Railroad, with large-scale renovations set to take place throughout the summer of 2026. These upgrades are designed to enhance safety, accessibility and the overall experience for families for years to come.

The railroad will be closed for the summer season due to the project, will include a realignment of the railroad track to improve ride quality and long-term reliability. Crews will also remove the existing train tunnel before building two brand-new tunnels featuring vibrant LED lighting elements.

Riders can also look forward to crossing a newly constructed bridge that will add both visual appeal and a refreshed sense of adventure along the route. Additional improvements include the installation of all-new sidewalks throughout the area, making it easier for families to navigate and enjoy the park, as well as the addition of two new picnic shelters that will provide welcoming spaces for gatherings. For added safety, railroad crossings will be upgraded with the installation of crossing arms.

Phase Two of the project will introduce the Embankment and Dragon Playground areas—two new, imaginative play spaces designed to complement the railroad experience and expand recreational opportunities for children of all ages.

To allow crews to safely and efficiently complete this work, the Stolley Park Railroad will be fully closed for the duration of the summer of 2026. While the temporary closure may be disappointing for frequent riders, the City encourages residents to view this as an investment in the future of one of Grand Island’s most cherished attractions.

“These improvements represent a significant reinvestment in Stolley Park and the Railroad experience that so many families have enjoyed for generations,” Grand Island Parks & Recreation Director Todd McCoy said. “When the train returns, it will offer a safer, smoother and more engaging ride, surrounded by new amenities that make the entire area even more inviting.”

Construction is expected to be completed in time to welcome riders back with an enhanced experience for the summer of 2027. Updates on progress and reopening details will be shared throughout the project. For more information, visit www.giparks.com.
