Street Smarts Kickoff Set for Saturday in Hastings

The Hastings Parks and Recreation Department and Hastings Police Department are collaborating to present Street Smarts Summer Kickoff, a new, free community event, 1-3 p.m., Saturday, May 16, 2026 in the Hastings Aquacourt Water Park parking lot at 2200 W. Third St.

Children can decorate bicycles and scooters inside the Community Center at 2015 W. Third St., and then join in a fun, safe wheels parade.

Street Smarts is oriented for elementary-aged participants but can be applicable to older and younger children as well.

HPD staff have created two exciting obstacle courses. A more challenging course for older kids and a smaller, beginner-friendly version for younger riders. Designed to be both fun and educational, the courses will give participants hands-on experience learning how their bicycle or scooter responds to turns, obstacles, and real-world riding situations. To participate in the obstacle course, all participants MUST wear a helmet.

HPD staff will also share important bicycle and scooter safety tips, rules of the road, and information about Hastings ordinances related to e-bikes.

Every participant who completes the course will also receive a “goody bag” to take home while supplies last!

“The Hastings Police Department is excited to collaborate on another fun event with the Parks and Rec Department,” HPD Capt. Jason Haase said. “These types of events are essential in building a safe, connected, and active community. By working together on events like this, we help children and families enjoy our community on their bicycles and scooters safely as we head into summer.”

Aquacourt memberships will be sold during this timeframe as well.

An ice cream social will follow the parade, and food trucks will be on site. Bring everyone together and kick off summer safely on Saturday, May 16.

The schedule is as follows:
1-2:15 p.m., bike decoration and bike safety lessons/course
2:20 p.m., bike/scooter parade
2:45 p.m. free ice cream social for participants
