LINCOLN, NEB. —   Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol responded to over 40 weather related incidents during Sunday’s winter storm.

As blizzard-like conditions affected Nebraska, troopers remained busy across the state. Troopers investigated 6 crashes, performed 43 motorist assists, and assisted other agencies with 6 responses on Sunday.

At approximately 3:32 p.m. Sunday afternoon, with assistance from Malcom Fire Department and Seward County Sheriff’s Office, troopers responded to a crash in Lancaster County. A Kia was traveling westbound on Highway 34 near mile marker 315 when it lost control due to the white-out conditions. The vehicle crossed into the eastbound lanes where it struck a Ford F150. The driver and passenger of the truck were transported to Bryan East with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Kia, Ladonna Craig, 39, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

In addition to this crash, troopers worked alongside 15 other agencies to resolve a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near the 420 interchange in Cass County. What began as a three vehicle crash quickly escalated to involve 30-40 vehicles. Additional information on this crash can be found here.

“The last several days have been difficult for many people across Nebraska, with wildfires continuing in the western part of the state and blizzard conditions in eastern Nebraska,” said Colonel Bryan Waugh, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “We’d like to thank everyone who has responded to these situations. Nebraska’s public servants and volunteers have proven time after time that they are ready to answer the call to help.”

As weather conditions continue to improve, the Nebraska State Patrol wants to remind motorists that spring can often be a turbulent time for those traveling within the state. Remember to check the Nebraska 511 system for updated travel conditions throughout the state and road closures related to wildfire responses. Any motorist who becomes stranded can call the NSP Highway Helpline at *55 and speak directly with an NSP dispatcher.
