United Way’s Day of Action Rallies Volunteers

GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA (June 8, 2026) Heartland United Way is rallying volunteers to take action and create meaningful impact throughout the community on June 18 for Day of Action, an annual event that unites neighbors to pitch in and create positive change in Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick Counties.

Traditionally held on or around June 21 (the longest day of the year), Day of Action invites volunteers of all ages to come together to help improve the community we all call home. Last year, nearly 100 volunteers joined Heartland United Way to paint shelter hallways, clean up a park, assemble science projects for kids and much more.

It’s part of Heartland United Way’s year-round efforts to mobilize communities to action so all can thrive.

“At Heartland United Way, we believe that when people unite to give back, take action, and get involved, real change happens,” said Heartland United Way President Karen Rathke.

Eight of Heartland United Way’s 20 community partners are hosting meaningful volunteer activities, including opportunities to organize donations, spruce up service centers and offices, retouch a mural and prepare emergency literature. In total, 12 volunteer opportunities are now available to sign up for at go2volunteer.org.

Also on June 18, everyone - volunteers and community members - are invited to drop in at the Heartland United Way office to see the impact your support is making while enjoying a SCOOPS coffee float (or regular coffee) and a few sweet treats from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. at 1441 N. Webb Road in Grand Island.

Through Day of Action, and all year long, Heartland United Way is working to ensure kids have access to safe places to grow, families are fed and housed and our communities are ready to meet challenges.
