US-136 will close for work on the In Red Cloud project
May 19, 2026 (Grand Island, Neb.) — Weather permitting, on May 26, U.S. Highway 136 (US-136) will close west of U.S. Highway 281 (US-281), from reference post 75.2 to reference post 75.45, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.
Paulsens, Inc., of Cozad, is the contractor for this project. Work on US-136 will include removing and replacing the existing pavement, brick pavers, curb and gutter, storm sewer, sidewalks, lighting, and wate rmain improvements. Eastbound and westbound traffic on US-136 will be detoured from N-10 to N-4 to N-78.
Northbound traffic on US-281 will remain open with a 10-foot width restriction, southbound traffic will remain detoured from N-4 to N-78 to K-128 to US-36. Anticipated completion is Oct. 2027.
Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and put phones down.
