Walk and Roll to School Day Thursday
Kearney—Kearney Public Schools are teaming up with CHI Health Good Samaritan, Safe Kids Platte Valley, University of Nebraska-Kearney Football, and the Kearney Police and Fire Departments for National Walk and Roll to School Day. The celebration is designed to spotlight the joys and benefits of active travel to school, while drawing attention to pedestrian and bicyclist safety.
On Oct. 9, the group will be stationed outside of Kearney’s Northeast Elementary starting at 7:30 am for a tunnel walk to greet the students. The importance of safe routes, helmet usage and other pedestrians and wheeled sports safety tips will be shared. Students are encouraged to either walk or roll to school that morning. Festive KPS colors, blue and gold, will also be worn at the event.
“Research suggests that physically active kids are more likely to become healthy, physically active adults, underscoring the importance of developing the habit of regular physical activity early,” says Catherine Gunderson, Principal, Northeast Elementary. “Bringing together this group of partners, in a fun environment, provides an opportunity for students to put into practice the safety lessons they’ve learned. And by walking or rolling to class, students also learn about supporting a cleaner environment and the importance of building a strong sense of community.”

Walk & Roll to School Day in the U.S began in 1997 as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities. Today, thousands of schools across the U.S.—and the globe—celebrate walking and rolling to school every year on the second Wednesday in October.
