Wildcats sweep Blue Jays; Rojo,Boys set school record
Following a 3rd and 4th Place finish at the Lou Platte Conference Tournament, The St. Paul Wildcats were in action Thursday at Ravenna to take on the Blue Jays.
It was a slow start for the St. Paul Girls while the Cats got off to an early 8-7 lead they found themselves in a small hole at halftime down 14-12. The Cats were originally down 14-10 with under 10 seconds left in the half but Katie Oakley was able to get a bucket before the horn to cut the Cat deficit to 2. The 3rd quarter was a completely different story for St. Paul as the Blue and Black roared off multiple 3 pointers from Oakley, Aubree Fitzgerald, and Addi Platek. The end result saw a 19-4 3rd quarter that gave the Girls enough momentum to pull away and not look back while Ravenna outscored St. Paul 7-6 in the 4th, the damage was done as the Wildcats earn their 6th victory of the season winning the contest 37-25.
Ali Dugan earned Runza MVP honors while Katie Oakley's second half shooting got her the Dugout Grill Dang Good Play of the Game.
The Boy's game started out as a track meet as both teams were flying down the floor matching bucket for bucket with St. Paul taking the early lead 18-15 lead. The special part of the Boy's game as Nolan Reilly sent Sophomore Bobby Rojo off the bench in the first quarter with the Cats a man down as Maddox Quinn was out of the lineup due to sickness. Rojo dialed up 5 3 pointers in the first half including a 4 point play as he sparked the Cats to a 25-2 2nd quarter to take a 43-17 lead at the half. Rojo wasn't finished there as the Sophomore came back in the 2nd half to shoot another 6 3 pointers finishing the game with 34 points enroute to an 83-40 Wildcat victory for their 9th win of the year.
Rojo, Tuesday nights Runza MVP breaks the school record for individual 3s in a game with 11 previously held by Tommy Wroblewski who set the mark at 8 in 2019-20. The Cats as a team reset the school record they tied earlier this year vs Central City where they shot 16 3s as a team and cleared that mark with 21 3s a team.
Casen Kaven takes home the Dugout Grill Dang Good Play of the Game with a 3 off the Bench to help solidify the School record.
