Work to begin soon on Windmill SRA aquatic habitat project

Nebraska Game and Parks

Aquatic habitat and angler access improvements will be made at Windmill State Recreation Area near Gibbon.

Starting the week of Sept. 22, park visitors and anglers can expect some areas to have limited access due to construction. The park will remain open to camping and use of the facilities.

The aquatic habitat project will include various access improvements to lakes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6, including the installation of several Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant accessible piers, a floating fishing pier and shoreline extensions.

Also, excavation of selected areas will reduce shallow areas that become disconnected from the main lake during the summer. A floodway will be developed along the south side of Lake 1 to carry floodwaters away from the lake. And in-lake habitats with rock shoals and floating islands will create diversity for various life stages of fish and invertebrates.

Funding is provided by the Nebraska Game and Parks Aquatic Habitat Program, the Capital Maintenance Fund and the Nebraska Environmental Trust.

The Aquatic Habitat Program, established in 1997, is maintained by the purchase of the $15 Aquatic Habitat Stamp that is included when each angler buys a fishing license.
