Work will begin on US-281 and US-136

March 30, 2026 (Grand Island, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin April 6 on U.S. Highway 281 (US-281) in Red Cloud, at reference post 5.8 to reference post 6.6, and on U.S. Highway 136 (US-136) in Red Cloud, at reference post 75.2 to reference post 75.45, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Paulsens, Inc., of Cozad, is the contractor for this project. Work on US-281 and US-136 will include removing and replacing the existing pavement, brick pavers, curb and gutter, storm sewer, sidewalks, lighting, and watermain improvements.  Northbound traffic on US-281 will remain open with a 10-foot width restriction. Southbound traffic will be detoured to N-10 and N-78. US-136 traffic will be detoured to N-4. Anticipated completion is Oct. 2027.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and put phones down.
